I read an interesting news on Batam Pos newspaper this morning about the newest Ecotourism program in Batam, which is Mangrove Forest Tour. According to Wikipedia “Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in saline coastal habitats in the tropics and subtropics – mainly between latitudes 25° N and 25° S. The saline conditions tolerated by various species range from brackish water, through pure seawater (30 to 40 ppt), to water of over twice the salinity of ocean seawater, where the salt has become concentrated by evaporation (up to 90 ppt)”.

In Batam, this program is pioneered by PT Kepri Enerflow Environment (KEE), a subsidiary company of PT Pembangunan Kepri. Currently the location of this Mangrove Forest Tour is in coastline of Piayu Laut, which consist an area of 10Ha that named as Mangrove Nursery Center.

In this Mangrove Forest Tour, the tourist shall visited the small islands while passing through the Mangrove Forest in Piayu Laut, Batam Island using small traditional boat. According to Yunita Fahmi, director of PT Kepri Enerflow Environment, this program shall benefit local people also from this Mangrove Forest Tour since the tourist shall use their traditional boats and the skill of local people as the tour guide.

According to the news, PT KEE planned that the Mangrove Forest Tour shall include the islands around Piayu Laut, through Kampung Bagan until the area around Bridge #1 of Barelang Bridge, a famous icon of Batam Island.

Well for me, this is such a good program to further promote Batam Island and Indonesia in general, to the outside world. Indonesia, with its vast ecological/natural resources can actually generate various kinds of Ecotourism program. This kind of tourism offers can provide an alternative way for tourism industry aside from regular tourist attraction, such as beaches, traditional culture and exotic foods. I do hope other areas in Indonesia can also come up with such Ecotourism product that they can offers to the world tourism community.
