Thaipusam celebration
In just days from now, there will be special occasion for Hindu community, especially Tamil which is “Thaipusam“. According to Wikipedia Thaipusam is “a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February)”.
Actually when I first heard the word “Thaipusam“, I thought it was a festival that celebrated by Thai people . Although Thaipusam is celebrated in the country where the Hindu especially Tamil community is majority, Thaipusam festival also celebrated in country where Tamil people is minority. For example in Malaysia or Singapore. I am not quite sure in Indonesia, but I think maybe Thaipusam is also celebrated in Medan, Sumatera Utara. This year, the Thaipusam celebration shall fall on 19 or 20 Jan 2011.
The Thaipusam festival itself is dedicated to commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan (the Tamil God of War) a vel (spear) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.
Here in Indonesia, maybe we are not that familiar with festival of Thaipusam, but I believe all of you may have seen pictures of mortification of man flesh by piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with skewers in some sort of festival. If you have seen it, you may have seen one of the occasion in Thaipusam festival. Although it is not something done by many men, the body piercing is indeed one of the point that make Thaipusam festival easily recognized. It is actually an acts of devotion, carrying of kavadi (burdens). The Kavadi itself is a physical burden through which the Hindu devotees implore for help from the God Murugan.
