Whatever they called it; whether Sangha Day, Macha Bucha, or Makha Bucha Day, the celebration is the actually commemorates one day in history when 1,250 monks, all from different places and on their on initiative, spontaneously came to pay homage to the historical Buddha. According to history recorded on Mah?samayasutta, DN-Comm 20, in which four marvellous events occurred:
1. There were 1,250 Sangha followers, that came to see the Buddha that evening without any schedule.
2. All of them were Arhantas, the Enlightened One, and all of them were ordained by the Buddha himself.
3. The Buddha gave those Arhantas principles of the Buddhism, called “The ovadhapatimokha”. Those principles are: – To cease from all evil,- To do what is good,- To cleanse one’s mind;
4. it was the full-moon day.
In that time of history, it is said then that Buddha gave an important teaching to the assembled monks on that day 2,500 years ago called the ‘Ov?dap?timokha’ which laid down the principles of the Buddhist teachings. In Thailand, this teaching has been dubbed the ‘Heart of Buddhism’.
Well, I learn another new thing today since I never realized that the people of Budhism in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia has their own unique religious festival. Based on what I read above the Macha Bucha day is really an unique religious festival.
